We Are Spider Women

The art of weaving and caregiving

According to the Hopi, the Goddess Spider Woman taught their people to spin and weave. She is the goddess who spins the life-giving rain clouds; she made the moon out of cotton. When the people practice the craft of weaving, the Hopi people re-create the Spider Woman’s mission. As they weave in sacred symbols in their blankets, they help to keep order in the universe. Literally, they are weaving the world together, one thread at a time.

As these weavers bend over their looms and pull the shuttle back and forth, gorgeous patterns emerge. The patterns are made with strands that link the artisan with her clan, and the clan in turn with the entire community– and finally to the entire Universe. If a disruption occurs in this intricate pattern, the weaver will repair the gap with bright and strong threads.

Spiderwoman could be the token spirit for caregivers, as well as weavers.

We toil at our craft of mending lives.

At times, it seems as though we are just engaged in mindless labor or staving off the next looming crisis. Our lives might seem to be one sprint through a crisis after another.

But there is a pattern, a meaning behind it all.

We are repairing the gaps and holes, by creating a whole life full of joy and fulfillment for our LOs. Do not look at the rended fabric, but look to the whole cloth and see the gorgeous pattern emerge.

“ God bless you, each one of you and know our prayers for peace meet yours as the Sun rises and sets.

“ May the Great Spirit guide you safely into the path of love, peace freedom and God on this Earth Mother.

“ May the holy ancestors of love and light keep you safe in your land and homes. Pray for God to give you something important to do in this great work which lies ahead of us all to bring peace on earth. — credited to Chief Dan Evehema
